One of our readers asked me about their WordPress problem, so I immediately jumped in and ask about their hosting and there I found out the culprit. Their hosting doesn’t support Simple script or Quick install and there’s no way to update WordPress to the latest version. Since it’s important to update your WordPress because of patch and security fixes, every webmaster should do it. You should update plugins and themes as well.
Back to the issue, the problem is that WordPress can’t be updated using the hosting tools because like I said there isn’t none. One way to do it is to update WordPress manually, which is really easy to do.
Today I will show you the steps I did to update our readers website, it’s really simple but you should be careful because if you overwrite the wrong file you blog is over.
Things we need are:
- Latest WordPress Version
- FTP access to your blog
Let’s Start!
Download the latest version of WordPress and unzip it, and we will delete some files on it.
Now we will delete wp-content, wp-config-sample and .htaccess from the folder.
Next is open your filezilla or other ftp programs, select all (CTRL+A) on the folder and drag ‘n drop them on filezilla.
Make sure that every file was successfully transferred, after that login to your WordPress site and check the footer on the right bottom part.
And we are done with the update, one thing that you should be cautious is overwriting .htaccess, wp-content and wp-config which will turn your world upside down. This is the reason why we deleted it from the folder before uploading it.
While this works on WordPress, this isn’t the same case for plugins. Most of the plugins doesn’t overwrite all of the files and sometimes it just adds new code files, make sure you always backup your wordpress site and keep everything organized and clean.
